Disasters happen. And spring weather either can be especially unpredictable. Whether you live in a part of the country that is a prone to tornadoes, earthquakes, hurricanes, flooding or wildfires, you can put a plan in place ahead of time to make sure you and your family stay safe and prepared for the future. Some important tips to consider include:

Have a family disaster plan ready. Designate a safe area in your home. If necessary, develop escape routes and have places to go in case of an evacuation. Make sure all family members have emergency phone numbers and know how to call 911.

Check your insurance coverage. Most home insurance policies cover wind damage cause by storms, subject to the policy’s exclusions and limitations. However, most damage during a hurricane is cause by flooding, which is usually not included in a home policy.

Prepare an emergency supply kit. Include non-perishable food, water, first aid kit, blankets, clothing, toiletries, prescription refills, flashlight and batteries, important document and cash.
